What a fun day!
Our first trip to Selhurst Park was a interesting match-up with the defensive stalwart of Palace - having clean sheets in both of their first two WSL games of the season, including an impressive display against Arsenal, up against the might offensive force of Tottenham Hotspur!
We were in pur seats in plenty of time before kick-off and watched the sides warming up - with the Spurs side warming up right in front of us - including shooting practice, where third-string goalkeeper - Sophie Jackson - warned us ahead of time it was come and with good warning as shots came flying in all over the place!
The warm ups ended and the players entered with a whole load fo fireworks accompanying them. Going to a lot of these away games always upsets me a little as it reminds me of the lack of effort our club actually puts in to the women's games - especially the ones at Brisbane Road.
Not long in the game, Palace went a player down - not that anyone in the crowd realised it until we saw the notification come through on our phones and frantically started counting the players to confirm it. Although not instantly, that is probably the moment that changed the whole match. Palace defended as they had shown previously for the first half as Spurs made attack after attack, but couldn't find a way to get the ball in the net and at half time I found myself hoping we wouldn't regret not taking our chances - although i was alo thinking that with them being a player don, they would surely tire near the end to allow to get some better chances.
And then the second half began and not too long into it, Olivia Holdt got us a breakthough and it would pen the floodgates, finally get a hattrick (the second being my favourite and the third her final kick of the ame). Victoria Pelova got her first - and second - goal as a Spurs player with Martinz and Amanda Nilden also getting in on the act.
My only gripe - and really is first world problems - is all the goals were at the opposite end, but th atmosphere in our end was electic. I will never forget the look on my little man's face when the seventh went it and we were all chanting "We want eight" he was singing louder than i have ever heard him and he had the biggest grin!
To some it was a WSL game against a newly promoted side who went down to ten men early, to be, it is a day ouy I will always remember!
